Chlorinated hydrocarbons Prepared by reaction in the liquid phase of aliphatic or aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbons or halogenated derivatives of these hydrocarbons, with chlorine. The source of chlorine is a gaseous mixture of nitric oxide and chlorine (0.1 mole NO per 1 mole Cl2) prepared by thermal or catalytic decomposition of nitrosyl chloride. The solvents used are aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or their halogen or nitro derivatives. The method is particularly useful for 1,2-dichloroethane production, using a ferric chloride catalyst. Separated nitric oxide is oxidised and reacted with an inorganic chloride to yield more nitrosyl chloride. |
