Plant growth regulating compsn. of 0.001-40% wt. of 2-chloroethanephosphonic acid or one of its salts and a water-sol. salt of 8-hydroxyquinoline, pref. the sulphate, in a molar ratio of 1:0.5-20 and 1-10:1, together with a dilutent, opt. contg. surfactants and/or buffers. Presence of the 8-hydroxyquinoline increases the rate of abscission of plants and induced by 2-chloroethane-phosphonic acid. Specific uses include defoliation of nursery plants such as peaches, cherries, pears, apples, grapes, or young rose plants. This makes peaches, for example, more visible and makes the mechanical harvesting of peaches, cherries, and other fruits and also nuts, easier.
