The appliance consists of a steam iron (1) and of a reserve tank (19) arranged outside the latter. The water vessel in the front part (7) of the iron (1) is connected, on the one hand, to the steam space in the metal cover (6) of the iron and, on the other hand, to the reserve tank (19). This arrangement makes it possible to give the water vessel a small design and thus keep it at the greatest possible distance from the evaporation space, and consequently, on the one hand, achieve a greater drop falling height and, on the other hand, avoid all the disadvantages associated with the comparatively high water temperature in the water vessel. <IMAGE>
