The underfloor heating system uses a large surface area flat heating element (1) which is sandwiched between the material (3) of the floor, and a heat storage material (2) underneath. The heat storage material may be based on Glauber salt, which undergoes a phase change at a temperature of 33 deg.C. The heating element is in direct contact with both layers, and the floor material may be tiles etc., while the storage material may be of spherical granules or any other convenient form. Alternatively, both layers may be of heat storage materials.
