A coin sorting unit is capable of handling coins of two different denominations and of individual counting. The coins are deposited onto a table (12) that rotates at a constant speed via a bevel gear drive. As the coins move round the periphery they are guided onto a rotating disc (90). The smaller coins are restricted to passage across a star wheel (76) coupled to a counter. A curved chute receives the small coins and passes them to a discharge point. The larger coins are passed over a second star wheel (80) with associated counter, and then onto a separate discharge chute (88).
