Compsn. effective against freckles, pigment anomalies and age spots (senile lentigines) consists of an anhydrous, esp. ointment-like vehicle and 4-25 (4-15) wt. % 1-ascorbic acid, (I), as active ingredient. The compsns. can be used as sticks or ointments. (I) inhibits melamine pigmentation of skin. Depigmentation is only temporary and reversible. The compsns. are effective and non-toxic. (I) can be used as ascorbyl laurate or -palmitate or as Ca- or Na ascorbate. A pref. vehicle is an anhydrous, hydrophilic "unguentum molle" type ointment contg. the very finely divided powdery (I). The vehicle may also be a polyethylene glycol ointment, consisting of a mixt. of polyethylene glycols having different mol. wts. and contg. (I) in dissolved form.
