Antimicrobial compsn. contg. acyl-betaine and amine oxide - giving long term control of body odour

Broad-spectrum, low-toxicity antimicrobial compsn. comprises (a) 0.1-40 pts. wt. acylbetaine of formula (I): R. CO. N(CH3)2-CH2-COO-(R = 10-18C alkyl); (b) 0.1-40 pts. wt. of an amine oxide of formulae (II)-(IV): R1-N(CH3)2 right arrow O (IIe R1-N(CH2CH2OH)2 right arrow O (III) R1CONH(CH2)3N(CH3)2 right arrow O (IV) R1 = (a mixt. of) 10-18C alkyl) and (c) a protonating agent (V) to give pH 4-5.5, esp. 4.7-5.2. Esp. (I) is stearylamido- or cocamido- N-betaine; (II) is coco-N, N-dimethylamine oxide and (V) is citric or acetic acids. Used as a body-wash to provide long term (>24 hr.) control of body odour and topical infections. They are effective against bacteria, yeast and fungi, and in mice the LD50 was >4g. intraperiotoneally or orally. They cause less prim. irritation of the skin and eyes than ordinary soap.
