<p>The starting material is a molten anhydrous mixt. contg. the chlorides of Mg, K and Na, where the molar ratio (MR) of KCl:MgCl2 = 0.9-5.0:1; the MR of Kcl:MaCl = 1.2-2.7:1; and the mixt. contains 19-38 wt.% NaCl. The molten mixt. is subjected to electrolysis and the Mg and Cl2 obtd. are removed. The stipulated compsn. of the molten electrolyte results in a higher yield of Mg and Cl2, plus a lower specific consumption of electricity. Typically, molten anhydrous mixt. (A) contained by wt. 42-44% MgCl2, 37-39% KCl, 17-19% NaCl, and had temp. 690-710 degrees C. This mixt. (A) was used to replenish the electrolyte (B), which was held at 675-685 degrees C. and the compsn. maintained at 3-14% MgCl2, 59-65% KCl, and 28-31% NaCl.</p> |
