Processed refuse or a mixture of refuse and sewage sludge are converted to uncompressed compost by a process of natural decomposition by arranging the material in layers or piles or baskets such that no product particles are further away from a ventilated surface than the depth of penetration d of fungal infection and the distance b left clear between facing ventilated surfaces is kept to the minimum necessary to permit gas exchange sufficient for the continuity of the decomposition process. For treatment of refuse and sewage sludge mixture of European origin maximum values of d = 15 cm and b = 10 cm are stated. Intensive decomposition takes place and is completed within one week.
