1,160,577. Cured polymeric articles. CABOT CORP. 6 Oct., 1966 [8 Oct., 1965], No. 44654/66. Heading C3P. Cured polymeric articles are prepared from uncured polymeric compositions based on polymers of α-mono-olefinic hydrocarbons with a thermally activatable curing agent by incorporating in the compositions before curing sufficient electrically conductive filler to impart thereto a specific resistivity at 20‹ C. of not more than 100,000 ohm-cms. and then, after thermoforming the composition to the desired shape, applying across the body of the resulting article an electrical potential having a frequency of from 0 to 1000 cycles per second and a voltage sufficient to cause current to flow through the body and raise the temperature thereof to at least the minimum active decomposition temperature of the curing agent. The preferred filler is a carbon black, e.g. acetylene black, conductive furnace black and graphite. The preferred curing agent is a liquid organic peroxide. In the examples, high density polyethylene, conductive furnace black and 2,5- dimethyl - 2,5 - di - (butyl peroxy) hexyne - 3 are used. |
