A device for severing a travelling yarn 1 or like elongated material comprising a cutter 17 connected to a piston-rod 18 of a piston 19 which is adapted to be actuated by compressed air under the control of a valve 31, the air being fed, in one position of the latter, to one side of the piston in order to load a spring 16 and in a second position of the valve, to act on the other side of the piston in order to drive the cutter on its operative stroke in addition to the power supplied by the loaded spring. The yarn 1 is fed from a processing machine over rollers 1, 3, 8, through a knot catching fork 9 and an aperture 14 in a cutter housing 15 to a pair of feed wheels 37 in a cutting machine 38. The piston-rod 18 is slidable in the housing 15 and prevented from rotating therein by means of a guide 20 cooperating with a rod 21, the guide also serving as an abutment for the spring 16. With the valve 31 in the position shown air is fed from a supply source 33, pipes 32, 30, vent valve 29 and pipe 28 into a chamber 27 in the cylinder 25 thereby loading the spring 16. In the event of a knot contacting the fork 9, the latter is deflected so as to actuate a switch 13 in an electrical circuit to a solenoid 34 connected to the valve thereby changing over the position of the valve. Air is then fed into a chamber 25 and the chamber 27 exhausted so that the cutter suddenly moves to cut the thread. Further switches 7 and 41 are included in order to actuate the cutter when excessive tension in the yarn raises a roller 3 or a build-up of shred occurs in the cutting machine 38. |
