An automatic or driverless industrial truck has load-carrying fork arms (4a) projecting rearwards from the truck carriage (1) to overlie and extend beyond wheeled legs (3) that project longitudinally from the carriage. The load carrier comprising the fork arms is capable of limited longitudinal movement relative to the carriage but is normally urged to an outermost position by resilient means. If during reverse movement the load carrier collides with an object, it is displaced against the force of the resilient means to operate a sensing device (5) (6) that then initiates the stopping of the truck.
