A diaphragm pump or compressor has a housing (1) and cover (2) with a diaphragm (7) clamped between them. The diaphragm is actuated by the crankshaft (12, 13) and connecting rod (15). To limit the distortion of the diaphragm it is supported in the plane of the attachment point (A) by a helical compression spring (25) which is, in turn supported by an annular platform (26) inside the housing. A second method of limiting the diaphragm distortion makes use of a guide rod attached to the diaphragm backing plate and sliding in a guide projecting from the housing wall.
