The floating floor slab provides sound insulation and is built of prefabricated blocks. Each block (2) comprises a rigid slab element with an integral base layer of insulation material (13), is laid on a substructural slab of e.g. concrete, and receives a floor covering e.g. tiles (17). The blocks are installed with the insulating layer (13) contacting a sub-structural slab in the acoustic plane. Installation is by simple placement and the underside of the blocks, i.e. the face in contact with the insulating layer (13), has a minimal shear resistance. The latter characteristic enables the blocks to absorb irregularities (7) in the sub-structural slab. The lower zones (11) of the blocks may be cellular, and the blocks themselves may be of wodd fibres (8) with a magnesium cement binder (19). The insulating layer (13) may be an elastically compressible foamed polyethylene.
|
