A field plate potentiometer has a very linear characteristic. The magnetic field through the field plate is continuously altered by means of a control spindle. The spindle is made of magnetic material and the axis of rotation (7) is directly over an air gap (4) above a field plate (1). The geometric shape of the control section (2) is such that the output voltage of the field plate potentiometer is a linear function of the angular displacement of the magnet. The axis of rotation of the control is at right angles to the top face of the field plate (1). The direction of motion is transverse to the edge of the magnet thereby eliminating the effect of any dirt on the edges.
