The pressure of a compressed air supply can be augmented by a reciprocating compressor driven by the air supply. Compressed air enters the inlet manifold (1) and passes through the inlet valve (8) into the chamber (11) and acts on the piston (13). This action compresses air in the lower cylinder (17) and delivers it to the reservoir (26). When the piston (19) reaches the end of its stroke it actuates the valve (21) which controls the flow of air to the slide valve (8). The slide valve then directs the incoming air to the other side of the piston (13) to reverse its direction.
