Synthetic drying oils and varnishes - prepd. by co-oligomerisation of styrene etc. with conjugated diene cpds. in hydrocarbon solvent medium using mol. wt. regulator

Film-forming compsns. are made by co-oligomerisation of arylakenes (I) with conjugated dienes (II) at 60-140 degrees C in a hydrocarbon solvent medium (III) in the presence of an organic (hydro)peroxide as co-oligomerisation initiator. The wt. ratio (I):(II) = 1-4:1 and the (III) used is a petroleum fraction with a boiling range of 160-220 degrees C, a hydrogenation prod. of this or naphthene hydrocarbons. The process is carried out in the presence of a mol. wt. regulator comprising a condensn. prod. of conjugated dienes with cyclodienes or a dehydrogenation prod. of these prods or a fraction with a b.pt. of 160-220 degrees C recovered from the liq. prods. of the pyrolysis of benzene. Process gives prods. with good drying properties useful as varnishes with good adhesion and resistance to weathering. The hydrocarbon solvents used are non-toxic.
