Thermoplastic aromatic polycarbonates (I) with aromatically bonded halogen, prim. or sec. alkyl and/or alkanyl substituents are modified by irradiation with UV after addn. of 1-5 wt. % (w.r.t. (I)) photoinitiator and opt. 0.05-5 wt. % (w.r.t. (I)) flame retardant. (I) has excellent organic solvent and stress cracking resistance and may be used for sheets and mouldings.
