1,211,083. Coated filler particles. MONSANTO CO. 15 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 42268/67. Heading B2E, [Also in Division C3] A polylactam coated filler is produced by the anionic polymerisation of the lactam in solution in a non-solvent for the resulting polymer the filler being uniformly distributed throughout the monomer solution in a quantity providing at least 10% by volume of the filler-lactam mixture and at least 0.1m<SP>2</SP> filler surface/g. lactam monomer. In preferred embodiments the filler has a Moh's hardness of at least 4, a Young's modulus at least twice that of the polyamide, and is pretreated with a coupling agent, e.g. an (#-aminoalkyl-trialkoxy silane. Numerous lactams, which may be homo- or co-polymerised, fillers, and solvents are specified. The fillers may be spheroidal, plate-like or fibrous and vary in size from 1 to 1000Á as particles or 1/8 to 1/2 inch as fibres. The coated filler produced may have a particle size above 0.1mm. for use as a moulding powder or in the range 10 to 100Á for fluidised bed coating or rotational moulding. In the Examples (1 to 5) varying quantities of 10 to 75Á quartz pretreated with 3- aminopropyl triethoxysilane, (6) 3-glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane coated 1/4 inch chopped glass fibres and (7) 18 to 60 mesh powdered cured phenoplast resin are coated with nylon 6. |
