1339141 Cutting or scoring glass PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 27 Aug 1971 [31 Aug 1970 26 March 1971] 40217/71 Heading C1M Apparatus for cutting or scoring glass includes a cutter head which is operatively coupled to a movable member within at least one constant reluctance motor which is in turn coupled to a source of electric current. As shown, a cutter head assembly 50 for cutting or scoring sheet glass is attached to a block 40 which is mounted on shaft 30. The shaft 30 is rigidly coupled to the rotors of a pair of direct current torque motors 10. Each motor includes a permanent magnet rotor 20 surrounded by an annular stator coil 16 having a pair of coils 12, 14 wound therearound. Electric current may be supplied to the coils 12, 14 via variable resistance R V1 by closing switches S 2 , S 3 thereby lowering the cutting head, or via variable resistance R V2 by closing switches S 1 , S 4 thereby raising the cutting head. A cutting wheel is disclosed of a material such as tungsten carbide with a diameter of ¢ inch and a cutting angle of 160 degrees or less. A method of automatically cutting a windshield blank or the like is disclosed which makes use of a function generator to supply variable signals to the constant reluctance motor (Figs. 7, 8 and 9, not shown).
