To ensure that the shaper adjusts its position as the charge changes its dimensions under varying temperature conditions, the springs at the contact end and the intermediate layer ensure that it is always in contact with the explosive payload. The intermediate layer is an adhesive varnish which does not react chemically with the charge, and which contains a small portion of the charge material.
