A rotational flow sifter (winnowing machine) with cylindrical chamber, coaxial bottom inlet, coaxial clean gas outlet at the opposite end, and tangential auxiliary gas inlets obliquely opposed to the main vortex, has an outlet annulus for sifted material around the inlet pipe, and, in addition, one or more intermediate circumferential outlets in the vortex chamber wall, between the mouth of the inlet pipe and the lowest of the auxiliary gas inlets. These outlets each collect particles of a specific range of size, thus utilising the natural grading effect of the vortex.
