Prepn. of tobacco using alkali metal salt, esp. carbonate - impregnated before or during fermentation treatment

The process comprises using at the fermentation treatment tobacco which has been impregnated with an alkali metal salt. The salt is pref. a carbonate esp. of potassium. The impregnation is pref. effected before or during the fermentation treatment. The salt is pref. added to a steep liquor from another tobacco. The tobacco is pref. stored in a confined area to ensure a good impregnation. The amt. of salt used is pref. 5-10% of the dry tobacco. The fermentation treatment is pref. carried out at a moisture content of 30-50%. The addn. of the salt enables a faster and more complete fermentation. It also inhibits the growth of moulds and reduces the amt. of condensates in the smoke of cigarettes made from the tobacco.
