In a process for decarbonating alkaline electrolyte contained in a fuel cell which includes a fixer for carbonate ion formed during the electrochemical process. The fixer comprises Li ions dissolved in the electrolyte and the electrolyte also includes a pH buffer and a neutral salt. The cells operates in two distinct, consecutive steps, a power production step and a decarbonation step. The presence of Li ions gives rise to a reaction with the carbonate ions formed giving Li2CO3 which pptes in the vicinity of the anode. The alkaline electrolyte pref. includes Li ions. A claimed electrolyte compsn. comprises 20-66 (36) g/l LiOH, 5-20 (15)g/l LiBO2, 5-25 (20) lithium citrate, 5-400 (300) lithium acetate, balance water. At the end of the power production step, the electrolyte may be transferred outside the cell. |
