Deep well pump operated by cable and spring - has light weight moving parts using cable under tension and spring

A manually operated pump for use with deep wells has a piston operating in a cylinder at the bottom of the well. The piston rod is attached by a cable to a quadrant attached to the end of the actuating lever. A compression spring mounted between the piston and a shoulder at the upper end of the cylinder presses the piston downwards after it has been raised by the lever. This combination of spring and cable is considerably lighter than the very long connecting rods which are usually used in deep well pumps.
