A carriage 4 supported on rails 3 by wheels 9 is transported by opposed hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 11 and 12. Retraction of the piston rod of cylinder 11 draws the carriage in the direction of the arrow 23 by engagement of a cross-shaft 19 with a U-shaped bracket 22. When the cross-shaft 19 drops off a cam rail 20, the cross-shaft 17 is advanced by cylinder 12 and raised by cam rail 21 to engage the bracket 22.
