Biological reagents and their use for the determn. of cholera toxin (choleragen or choleragenoid), cholera toxin antibodies and ganglioside GM1 (I) or its derivs. are claimed. The reagents comprise erythrocytes treated with a carbonyl cpd. and coupled with (I) or its derivs., and opt. coupled with a sub-agglutinating amt. of cholera toxin. The reagents have a long shelf-life (>=1 year at 4 degrees C), can be freeze-dried, can be prepd. using small amts. of crude (I), and have high sensitivity for cholera toxin determn. (a few ng/ml).
