<p>Rotatable friction discs (5) are brought into engagement with opposed radial surfaces (3, 4) in a stationary housing (1) by an expander mechanism which is located between the discs and which comprises a pair of axially separable pressure plates (6, 7). The expander mechanism incorporates a hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly (17) which is operative to move the pressure plates away from each other when the cylinder (19) is pressurised. The piston is keyed against rotation in the cylinder in which it works and is integral with the other pressure. Balls are received in recesses in opposed end walls in the cylinder and piston.</p> |
