Working-up of waste paper consisting mainly of paper treated with non-saponifiable printing ink-binders, esp. paper printed-upon by xerography e.g. paper treated with black-pigmented polyethylene powder, or ZNO-coated paper, comprises dissolving the paper in known manner and strongly swelling the constituent fibres at 10-30 degrees C using an electrolyte, so that the printing ink detaches itself and the printing-ink particles are sepd. from the fibres. The process can be effected under mild conditions, i.e. at relatively low temp., thus avoiding damage to, or destruction of, the fibre to be recovered.
