A maximum specified number of subscriber channels can simultaneously carry out conversations through a smaller number of transmission channels, owing to allocation of a transmission channel to a subscriber only when he actually speaks. Available transmission channels are allocated at the sending side to the actually talking subscriber channels by keeping a specified channel engaged as seldom as possible. When this channel is free, synchronisation signals are transmitted through it to the receiving side. Transmission of synchronisation signals is recognised at the receiving end from continuously transmitted address signals of subscriber channels.
