Polyethylene foil adhesive and printing ink receptivity - is improved by ionic etching of surface

Polyethylene foils have their surfaces roughened to improve their receptivity w.r.t. adhesives or printing inks by exposing the surfaces to ionic etching. Pref. the ionic etching is carried out using O2 which has been rendered active by high frequency activation. Period of etching may be varied from 5-20 mins. Ionic etching leads to uniform surface roughening in which the punctiform depth is 0.1 mu. Roughening results also in promotion of formation of permanent bonding gps. Ionic etching improves the receptivity without impairing other characteristics of the foils.
