Dyeing takes place in a two-stage procedure. Two part-treatment liquors are used here. Before or after a treatment taking place on all or part of the surface of a carpet consisting of natural and/or synthetic polyamide fibres using a part-treatment liquor (I) containing an electrolyte-free dyestuff and a thixotropic synthetic thickener, a part-treatment liquor (II) containing at least one electrolyte, optionally thickened and preferably dyestuff-free, is applied in an amount which corresponds to a weight increase in the carpet, relative to its dry weight, of less than 100 %. Undesired interactions are prevented by separating the batches. By this means, the possible choices with respect to the type and amount of the auxiliaries and dyestuffs to be used are significantly widened.
