The device is provided at each end of a knitting machine. The yarn (31) which comes from the spool, passes through the eyelets (8) and (11), through the yarn clamp (1), through the eyelet (12), through the eyelet (3) of the return arm (27) of the yarn tensioner (16) and the eyelet (23), then it is led towards the yarn distributor of the knitting carriage. When the latter moves in the direction of (A), the tension in the yarn is due only to the friction in the eyelets (23, 30, 12) and in the yarn clamp (1). This friction is greatly decreased by virtue of an acute angle ( alpha ). When the carriage returns in the direction of (B), the eyelet (30) describes a curve (32) and presses the yarn on to a substance with a high coefficient friction (33) which has the function of preventing the return arm from pulling on the yarn of the spool. The device allows high speed knitting on conventional machines. <IMAGE>
