Flat-glass ribbon is made by melting glass in a tank and allowing it to flow out of the tank via an exit channel or overflow, with an exit velocity controlled by an adjustable static pressure above the exit opening. Specifically glass from the lower part of the melting tank is passed into an exit chamber where it may be partially or completely reheated. The current flows in the glass tank designed to provide a steady flow of glass through the outlet or controlled partly by heating or cooling of the exit chamber. The glass produced has exceptionally good optical qualities and can be produced in large quantities with properties which can be controlled within wide limits.
