The fuel is prepd. by (a) heating a mixt. of cyclopentadiene dimer (I) and methyl-cyclopentadiene dimer (II) at 150-250 degrees C. (190-230 degrees C.) for 10-180 (15-60) mins., in presence of is not >0.1 wt.%, w.r.t. the mixt. of oxygen, and (b) hydrogenating the prod. from (a), in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, to saturate completely the olefinically unsatd. bonds, at 25-160 degrees C. (80-120 degrees c.) and H2 press. of 150-800 (200-500) psig. The fuel has liquid density >1 (1.029) g./ml., and low m.pt., e.g. -30 degrees C. The heat of combustion is, e.g. 154,000 BTU/US gallon, compared with 124,000 for kerosene. Readily available dimer feeds can be used to produce the trimer fuel by controlling the reaction temp.
|
