In a circuit arrangement for identifying subscriber lines (Tln) involved in a switching process on the basis of corresponding identification request signals, an identification signal is transmitted for a cycle test via the initiating switching element and the connection path (AS-GW) already set up to the relevant subscriber line circuit (TS). From there, it passes via an identification network (CE) supplying its address to a device (IDC) which sends out the identification signal, evaluates the identification result and forwards it. To handle one and the same identification request, coded identification signals in each case effecting an identification process are periodically successively sent out. At least the duration of the pulse time and the interpulse time of an identification pulse are taken as identification signal. The periodic occurrence in the receiving circuit (SE) is detected and the result obtained from the identification process is only released for further processing by a subsequent device with a repeated correspondence in the evaluation of successive identification signals. A static comparison of potentials between the drive pulse for the transmitter (S) and the received signal is carried out. <IMAGE>
