Kiln has a fixed floor on which the batch of mouldings to be fired can be stacked. The floor has a number of openings for venting the gases into collector channels forming part of the floor and joining a common main flue. As soon as the gases vented from the kiln enter the collector channels, their temp. is lowered by cold air delivered along feeder channels connected into the collector channels at the points where the vents in the kiln floor open into them. The cold air channels may be formed in the kiln floor and have branches into the collector channels where the vents in floor meet them. One or more cold air channels may be installed in the stack of mouldings inside the kiln. The arrangement overcomes the difficulty that in normal ovens of this type so much heat is accumulated in the floor of the kiln that the bottom zone of the core of the stack of roof tiles maintains a much higher temp. than the other parts.
