The faults are counted by the sequential control method, in which specified switching processes are carried out when a limig of fault reports is reached during a continuously counted number of events. The counter is then reset to zero, resetting also the second counter which counts the faulty events. A common event counter (BZ) is allocated to all supervised units (F1-Fn). Each unit (F1-Fn) is connected to a fault counter (FZ1-FZn). The event counter (BZ) is connected to all fault counters (FZ1-FZn) by a common wire (a) through which they are reset. A quotient is formed from the number of events in a unit of time and the number counted by the counter (BZ). It is used to correct the limit of faults before an alarm is initiated.
