The air classifier (1) possesses a plurality of identical classifying elements (2) connected in series. Each classifying element (2) has a chamber (3) with a feed opening (4) for material to be classified and a discharge opening (5) for coarse material. Each chamber (3) has two plates (6, 7), the upper plate (6) being designed as a box (10) with a perforated working surface (11). Opposite the base (6) is a suction nozzle (16) for fine material. The suction nozzle (16) can be pivoted upwards and is provided with an adjustable and movable secondary air opening (18). The air classifier can thus be adapted to the properties of the feedstock. In particular, it has a minimum of classifying stages which permit a multiplicity of components of the material to be classified to be separated according to only slightly different sorting features.
