District heating using power station waste heat - uses ammonia vapour as long distance transport medium with local water heaters

A steam turbine drives a generator. The exhaust steam is condensed in a heat exchanger in which it evaporates ammonia. The ammonia is pumped through a long distance pipe network to local user stations. At local stations the ammonia is compressed and then passed through heat exchangers in which it is condensed. It gives up heat to water which is pumped through a space heating system. The ammonia can also be passed directly through heat exchangers without being compressed to heat water to a lower temperature for domestic use. The use of ammonia for transporting heat reduces insulation requirements.
