Moulding sand expansion testing - by heating preformed disc above photoelectric barrier

The expansion behaviour of moulding sand is determined quantitatively by compressing a certain wt. of sand into a certain volume inside a ring. The ring is heated electrically or by a gas ring burner and the time elapsed until a shell of sand spalls off is measured by a photoelectric device.
