A compound of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R' is lower alkyl is useful as an intermediate to prepare a compound of the formula <IMAGE> wherein X is selected from the group consisting of: <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal, NH4+, NH(CH2CH2OH)3+, and lower alkyl, branched or straight chain, with up to about C20 in the chain. The ester can be converted to the corresponding salt, useful as a detergent builder.
