PURPOSE:p-Nitrotluene is reacted with sodium polysulfide in the presence of an aprotic polar compound such as N,N-dimethylformamide to form the aldehyde, which is then subjected to diazoatization and hydrolysis to afford titled compound in high yield. CONSTITUTION:p-Nitrotoluene is reacted with sodium polysulfide of Na2Sx where x is 2-5 in a mixed solvent of an alcohol and alkali aqueous solution in the presence of an aprotic polar solvent such as 0.01-10wt% of N,N-dimethylformamide on the p-nitrotoluene basis to form p-aminobenzaldehyde. After reacted with an aqueous sulfuric acid at 60-100 deg.C, the aminobenzaldehyde is diazotized and then hydrolyzed at 70-100 deg.C to produce the objective compound. As the solvent an alcohol which contains at least 80% of ethanol is preferred. USE:Intermediates of medicines, agricultural chemicals and perfumes. |
