This method is used for the light brightness control of a gas discharge lamp (L) by means of phase-gating control (PS) for the supply alternating voltage. Ignition of the discharge path is performed with the aid of a capacitive auxiliary electrode (Eh) which is at least approximately at the potential of one lamp electrode. In order to reduce the mains flicker at low brightnesses by a simple type of connection of the auxiliary electrode, the ignition is initiated in those half waves of the supply alternating voltage (Un) which correspond to a negative potential of the lamp electrode (Eo), which is at the same potential as the auxiliary electrode, with respect to the lamp electrode (E1) whose potential differs from the auxiliary electrode. In this case, the initiation is performed at a phase angle which is earlier with reference to the other half waves. <IMAGE> |
