<p>The prodn. of low-S iron sponge from iron ore pellets in a shaft furnace in which the pellets are being charged at the top and the iron sponge being discharged at the bottom, comprises (a) treating the ore with a reducing gas which consists of an unburnt, desulphurized gas, formed by partial oxidn. of hydrocarbons and desulphurization, with recycled waste gas to form a cold mixed gas, and contg. about 10 vol.% CO2, the ratio of unburnt gas to waste gas being 0.8-1.0, and (b) heating the mixed gas immediately prior to its introduction into the furnace to about 1000 degrees at which temp. it is introduced.</p> |
