A packed, soft, comfortable menstrual tampon is made by (a) forming a tampon out of regenerated cellulose sponge as absorbent; (b) saturating the tampon with a softening liq; (c) exerting sufficient pressure, opt. with heating, on tampon to remove excess liq. pref. so that tampon retains 0.05-2.5 (0.05-1)g liq./g sponge; and (d) packing the tampon is a container which is impermeable to softening liq. Cellulose sponge is non-toxic and can be degraded biologically. The moist, soft, expanded tampon can absorb a large quantity of menstrual fluid, e.g. >8x its own dry wt. of fluid would be absorbed by a tampon retaining 0.9g water/g sponge. The softening liq. is esp. water or petroleum, glycerol, polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol.
|
