The device has at least one pickup for the sample temperature, and a monitoring device for the temperature-time characteristic of the cooling sample, delivered by the pickup. It delivers a measurement command when a characteristic curve shape appears, and an evaluation device for processing of at least one characteristic test value for delivery of a carbon content value. A comparator precedes the evaluation device. It compares the characteristic liquidus (8) temperature of the melt with a specified limit value in order to differentiate between steel and cast iron melts. It delivers a control command for a specific evaluation.
