Aldehydes were prepd. by hydroformylation of olefins in the presence of halogen free Rh complexes with trivalent P, and then the halogen compds. were removed in advance of the reaction. The atomic ratio of S to sulfur compds. was 3(S/Rh), and molar ratio of dienes or acetylenes (present in the reaction system) to Rh was kept below 4. Thus, H-CO (1:1) was introduced into a mixt. of 250mmole propylene, RhH(CO)PPh3)3 (10mg as Rh) and 2.5g Rh P at 50 kg/m2 and 120≦̸C to effect hydroformylation.
