The reel has a spool axle (2) journalled in a bearing block (1) with a predetermined amount of play. A roller (9) is resiliently biassed in the direction of its axis of rotation and is arranged to load the spool axle (2) in one radial direction to take up the play. In this way, the axle (2) is always resiliently urged against the same part of the bearing block, yet sufficient play remains to avoid increased bearing friction. Pref. the roller (9) is mounted on an axle (8) parallel to the spool axle (2) and is conical.
