The machine treats vegetables, fruit etc. by soaking them in a bath of liq. through which they are continuously conveyed. The prod. is fed into a horizontal, cylindrical, rotary drum which has a perforated shell. The lower part of the shell is immersed in liq. in a treatment bath. Inside the drum, a coaxial, helical scroll conveys the prod. through the liq. as the drum rotates. At the discharge end of the drum, radial paddles lift and drain prod. which is delivered for packing. The depth to which the drum is immersed in the liq. is approximately equal to the effective radial width of the conveying scroll. Below the drum, a make-up tank is pref. installed to contain concentrated treatment liq. which is added continuously to the bath to keep up liq. strength in operation. The make-up liq. is transferred by a bucket elevator driven from the rotating drum. Drive to the rotary drum is pref. via belt loops in which the ends of the drum are suspended. The treatment is usually to protect the prod. from disease, rotting, pests, etc. during storage prior to use as seed or food. Fully mechanised soaking is of controlled duration, depth and concn. excellent penetration of soiled vegetables, and no damage to prod. are other advantages.
|
